September Space/World Cares
The fine folks at Septemebr Space were incredibly helpful to the SFPNYC ...
This organization has expanded and is now called World Cares Center.
"September Space is a community center that evolved out of the grassroots, volunteer spirit that swept New York City in the days following 9-11-01. It was founded by a group of disaster volunteers who realized that mutual support and comfort are as crucial now as they were at Ground Zero. We became determined to establish a permanent location where people could go to find a social and emotional support network to help them cope with the residual effects of the attacks. With that idea in mind September Space was born.
September Space is a community center for volunteers, recovery workers, uniformed personnel, survivors, their families, and anyone impacted by September 11th. The facility provides a warm, casual gathering place where comfort and support are easily accessible, free, and no strings attached".

Citizens Committee for New York City
This organization helped get the Sunflower Project NYC rolling back in June. They are a great resource for everyone who has ever thought about making a difference in their community and our city.Ther excellent web site is dense with information that helps cut through the usual roadblocks to getting started. Neighborhood groups can even get their own free websites. CCNYC makes advocacy and participation easy--even fun.
That's a tall order--and they got it going on.

Point Thank You - The Nuts on the Highway
These were the amazing volunteers who stood out on the West Side Highway medians on Christopher Street day and night-- rain, shine or freezing from September through May to thank the rescue and recovery workers who drove to and from Ground Zero. Incredible spirits....
and a fun bunch to boot!
Lenore, one of the Nuts, was the first to plant outside NYC.
She wrote in to the SFPNYC message board:
"I volunteered with a great group of New Yorkers at the West Side Highway and Christopher St.- a place called Point Thank You. In their honor, I have planted a patch of sunflowers in Scranton, Pa.for their dedication to cheering on the recovery workers. Also, each sunflower will represent the people standing tall and proud as the recovery workers drove past them on their way to the World Trade Center. I will send a photo when they bloom." |
